Swedish House Mafia, ‘Until One’ (Astralwerks)

A quarter century ago, Chicago DJs invented emphatically raw house music by sampling and re-creating disco riffs declared extinct. On this nonstop, 24-cut collection of tracks and remixes, Stockholm spinners Axwell, Steve Angello, and Sebastian Ingrosso try to write their own chapter of house history. The sources are sometimes unexpected (Miike Snow’s unshakably lovely “Silvia”) but more often obvious–the piano from Coldplay’s “Clocks,” the synths from MGMT’s “Kids.” Until One‘s slick, well-mixed results underscore the sameness of the Swedes’ sound: Vocals may vary (Pharrell, Brit MC Tinie Tempah), but the tempo of the beats rarely does over 80 unrelenting minutes.
