WATCH: Robert Rodriguez Directs Hot TX Band
Watch Girl in a Coma's new video for "As the World Falls Down," a cover of Bowie's 'Labyrinth' jam.
On their new disc Adventures in Coverland, Girl in a Coma tackle David Bowie’s creepy-cool “As the World Falls Down,’ from his 1986 cult classic Labyrinth. But the Texas punk trio had just unleashed a new video that proves they’ve made the song their own. For the clip, Girl in a Coma teamed up with their pal and Sin City director Robert Rodiguez. Watch it below!
Rodriguez, a fellow Texan, is a big fan of the band. He sought out Girl in a Coma on his own after seeing them play at last year’s South by Southwest festival. The director casually filmed the group’s gigs at SXSW and in the band’s hometown of San Antonio. Without telling them, Rodriguez cobbled together some of the footage for “As the World Falls Down,” and then handed it over to the band as a gift. “It was a nice surprise,” says Girl in a Coma’s Nina Diaz.
Girl in a Coma have returned the favor by contributing a song to Rodriguez’ next film Machete. The track, “Yo Oigo,” plays during a pivotal fight scene in the movie. “We instantly hit it off, and he brought up the idea of doing a song for Machete, and we happily agreed to be a part of it,” says Diaz.
Both “As the World Falls Down” and “Yo Oigo” are included on the band’s latest Adventures in Coverland, a collection of covers ranging from Joy Division to Buffalo Springfield to Richie Valens. The album hits stores October 19. In the meantime, check out the Rodriguez-directed clip below, and tell us what you think in the comments section.
