Terrific Twitter Trio of the Week

100923-follow-friday.jpg

Lots of musicians tweet — but all that Twitters is not gold.

That’s why you’ll want to check out SPIN.com every Friday to see whose tweets we’re reading this week — then update your TweetDeck! (Obligatory Self-Promotion: …while you’re at it, be sure to follow @SPINmagazine!)

This week’s winners:

  • The Vaselines
    @the_vaselines

    Who: The Vaselines (@the_vaselines)
    Why You Should Follow: Kurt Cobain was a huge fan of this Glasgow indie rock band, even naming his daughter, Frances Bean, after Vaselines singer and songwriter Frances McKee. They broke up in 1989, the same week that their only full-length album, Dum-Dum, was released, but began performing together again in 2006 and just last week released their second studio album, Sex with an X.
    Currently on tour in Europe, their tweets are full of excellent Twitpics of neon crosses and graffiti, as well as plenty of quiz show-worthy trivia tidbits (they almost named the new album Second Coming or Fuck the Vaselines; musician and producer Calvin Johnson was the one who gave Cobain a copy of their first EP). They often post links to their own press (“You might’ve noticed that I only post the good reviews of our album. Well I’d hardly post anything that Q had to say about us”), but they also re-tweet other music news stories they find interesting — like a recent article about the band Mogwai.
    Best Tweet of the Week: “On this tour I have been worrying if I’m mutton dressed as lamb then I saw a picture of Lady Gaga in a meat dress. Feel better now.”

  • Dum Dum Girls
    @dumdumgirls

    Who: Dum Dum Girls (@dumdumgirls)
    Why You Should Follow: This L.A.-based noise-pop quartet knows how to make the most of their time on tour. While on the road with Vampire Weekend and Beach House these past few weeks, they spent their days digging through thrift stores, hunting for muscle cars, leaving their mark in secret places, and tweeting ”
    Their Twitpics offer a tiny glimpse into their glamorous, jet-setting lives — whether they’re trying on custom dresses, hanging out on the beach in tights and heels, or partying with performance artists in clown makeup, they usually find time to upload an iPhone snap (or at least write a quick tweet). Expect many more exciting tweets from these ladies as they begin their European tour with MGMT (and play a few solo gigs along the way)!

    Best Tweet of the Week: “we are in the UK! jules tuner pedal crapped out in brooklyn — anyone brit wanna help out? borrow for endless MGMT guest lists…”

  • Diplo
    @DIPLO

    Who: Diplo (@diplo)
    Why You Should Follow: You never know what Diplo is going to tweet — a tale of druggy insanity at a club in Zimbabwe (“The dude told me it was cocaine.. I’m pretty sure this is gunpowder tho… all i see is beady lil red eyes in the dark and all i hear are snarls. i cant tell if this is a strip club or i’m #dreamingofhyenas”), a sudden realization (“Whoa.. Jus remembered I’m djin crazy secret rave in LA tonight with B.O.B and shephard obey dawgy”), or a “lost/new/crazy” song he produced for M.I.A. that didn’t make the cut on her latest album, like he did on Wednesday. He lives an insane life full of travel, Thai disco, drug deals, airport shoplifting, and strippers, and his more than 78,000 Twitter followers are dragged along for the ride. When he “almost [gets] butterfly-knifed” or wakes up in a bathroom somewhere in Manila, you’ll feel like you’re right there with him, living on the edge.
    Best Tweet of the Week: “At a dentist in bangkok gettin 3 fillings for .63 cents each”
