Terrific Twitter Trio of the Week

100916-twitter.jpg

Lots of musicians tweet — but all that Twitters is not gold.

That’s why you’ll want to check out SPIN.com every Friday to see whose tweets we’re reading this week – then update your TweetDeck! (Obligatory Self-Promotion: …while you’re at it, be sure to follow @SPINmagazine!)

  • The Flaming Lips’ Wayne Coyne
    @waynecoyne

    Why You Should Follow: Anyone who’s seen the Flaming Lips in concert knows that frontman Wayne Coyne has a lot of stage presence. When he’s not surfing sold-out stadiums in his signature plastic bubble, he’s got a lot of Twitter presence, too. His tweets are mostly Twitpics of the things that comprise his existence – trippy doodles, dead birds and grasshoppers, rehearsal sessions, “wicked” rainbows, and massive chandeliers. He posts occasional iPhone self-portraits, muses about everything from reincarnation to Thai food, and offers fans the chance to experience (at least digitally) what it feels like to play music and get high with Wayne Coyne. Expect lots more from him as he and his bandmates embark on a North American tour this Friday and head to Asia in early November!

    Best Tweet of the Week: This crazy doodle, which Coyne drew while working on the upcoming music video for their song “The Ego’s Last Stand.”

  • Superchunk
    @superchunkband

    Why You Should Follow: This legendary indie band – who ruled the mid-’90s college rock scene with songs like “Slack Motherfucker” and “Hyper Enough” – just released their ninth studio album, Majesty Shredding, to critical acclaim and much fanfare. One fan even tweeted “I think the new @superchunkband broke my iPhone,” posting this screenshot as evidence. Superchunk encourages their fans to communicate with them on Twitter, and rewards clever tweets by re-tweeting them. In addition, they post vintage Twitpics, discuss their favorite books and music, and provide plenty of pop culture commentary. A recent example: “They must have kept Gaga’s dress in a freezer since the Undertones used it,” referring to the raw meat outfit Lady Gaga wore to the VMAs and this album cover. Bonus points: Their drummer, Jon Wurster, is a hilarious Twitterer himself – follow him at @jonwurster for even more Superchunk action!

    Best Tweet of the Week: “eh, kind of too tired to walk around this crazy town. not even that crazy really. #indierockretractions”

  • Janelle Monáe
    @janellemonae

    Why You Should Follow: With her sky-high pompadour, slick white tuxedos, powerful voice, and Prince-meets-Bowie persona, Janelle Monáe is already a powerhouse in the worlds of music and fashion. She just kicked off her tour with Of Montreal with two sold-out shows in D.C. and appeared at last week’s Fashion’s Night Out in New York City, where tons of fans showed up to watch her perform in the window of the Ralph Lauren store in Soho (including Vogue editor-at-large André Leon Talley, whom she calls “my godfather”). Her tweets offer a tiny glimpse into her extraordinary life. Look out for Twitpics of pre-show prayer circles in Moscow and tour posters, as well as inspirational quotes, declarations of love for her fans and fellow musicians, and rallying cries like, “Musical theater students stand up! Thespians unite!”

    Best Tweet of the Week: “1st stop. 930 club. DC. Sold OuT. Androids. Decoys! #thrivals! (black & white garb Will help identify you). Beware of droid control.”
