Strokes: Homecoming Gig for NYC Fashion Week
Iggy Pop, Karen Elson, Gwen Stefani, and other musicians also join in the fashion week festivities.
After four long years, New York City’s prodigal sons the Strokes will return to rock the Big Apple on Sunday, Sept. 12. Welcome back, boys.
The show-happening at the Metropolitan Opera House-is part of a celebration for Tommy Hilfiger’s 25th anniversary, held during New York Fashion Week. Unfortunately, it’s an invite-only event; according to the New York Times, “1,200 invitations, which resembled a box of ivy, were sent out.” The party’s theme is “rock’n’roll meets prepster,” said Mr. Hilfiger.
As expected, invitations for the show-the Strokes third in the U.S. since reforming-are in high demand. Some, like this guy, are taking to Craigslist for help.
Public or not, concertgoers are in for a good show. At Lollapalooza, during their first U.S. gig since reforming, the quintet ripped through a 16-song set that “served to remind that the Strokes were, and are, a pretty simple and effective and successful rock band, an increasingly rare commodity,” wrote SPIN’s Steve Kandell. The Strokes are currently working on their much-anticipated follow-up to 2006’s First Impressions Of Earth, which frontman Julian Casablancas said will drop in March. Watch video of the band recording a new track in the studio here.
The Strokes aren’t the only outfit playing New York Fashion Week. On Friday, dubbed Fashion’s Night Out, Iggy Pop will play the John Varvatos store (the former digs of CBGBs); Jack White’s wife, model-musician Karen Elson, will play the Balenciaga store; Joss Stone and Train will perform at Macy’s Herald Square, where Sean “Diddy” Combs will also appear; Taboo of the Black Eyed Peas will play Saks Fifth Avenue; Bryan Adams will perform at the Calvin Klein Collection store; and Gwen Stefani will appear at Sephora’s Broadway store.
