The Hundred in the Hands, ‘The Hundred in the Hands’ (Warp)

This Brooklyn duo reverses dance music’s gender roles: Drawing from Gallic girlie-pop, singer-keyboardist Eleanore Everdell maintains a blasé sense of control, while multi-instrumental guy pal Jason Friedman gets excitable, juxtaposing strains of subcultural disco and post-punk against her world-weary deadpan. The detached aesthetic can turn anesthetic when the tunes occasionally falter or the overdubbed grooves fail to generate frisson, but the sweetly twitchy one-two punch of “Dressed in Dresden” and “Last City” brings this studiously chic debut to a sweaty climax.
