Klaxons, ‘Surfing the Void’ (Polydor)

These British dance-rockers’ 2007 debut spurred the U.K. press to invent the genre tag “nü-rave,” but Klaxons’ follow-up makes clear that their use of air-raid sirens was less about ecstatic parties and more about actual air raids. The laser-light barrage accompanying Jamie Reynolds’ apocalyptic Mars Attacks poetry has been darkened (with the help of nü-metal producer Ross Robinson) to focus on villainous guitar rambling, dread-in-the-gut bass lines, and stentorian falsetto shrieks. But even Klaxons’ most ominously rambunctious tracks grind out plenty of bug-eyed dream-pop chants.
