Crocodiles, ‘Sleep Forever’ (Fat Possum)

Disciples of a noise-punk tradition that runs from the Velvet Underground to the Jesus and Mary Chain and beyond, San Diego’s death-obsessed Crocodiles revise their formula slightly on this highly entertaining second album. Dazed frontman Brandon Welchez and guitarist Charles Rowell expand their sonic palette, intertwining electro beats, heavy echo, actual melodies, and plain old trashy rock. Sometimes the results are stunning (“Hearts of Love”); elsewhere, the barrage of studio effects leaves you wondering if they’re merely covering up crap songs. Either way, Sleep Forever never bores.
