Born Ruffians, ‘Say It’ (Warp)

After a scrappy, catchy 2008 debut, this Toronto trio apparently decided to drop out of contention for the indie-pop crown and aim instead for simplicity, strangeness, and soul. While the music unhurriedly cops from Afropop and Stax, frontman Luke LaLonde imitates David Byrne and yowls out semi-profound puns that are equal parts groan and grin. “Sole Brother” is a litmus test: If you don’t dig this slightly sinister, three-act meditation on siblinghood, which ends with LaLonde wishing he was Ghostface’s brother, then you’re just not on the band’s weird wavelength.
