Love her or hate her, Katy Perry is back. Her sophomore album, Teenage Dream, is set for an August 24 release — and its first single, “California Gurls,” featuring Snoop Dogg, is out now. Listen to it here.

Perry, the former Christian pop star who wears a cross-emblazoned guitar strap but sings about love, sex, Vegas, and making out with girls, says she wrote “California Gurls” as a West Coast answer to Jay-Z’s “Empire State of Mind”: “I decided that we needed to make a response. I want people to want to book a ticket to California the first time they hear it.”

The track finds Perry — who’s engaged to British comedian Russell Brand — raving about riding around in jeeps, wearing bikini tops with Daisy Dukes, sippin’ gin and juice, and boasting “sun-kissed skin so hot we’ll melt your popsicle.” Later, Snoop joins in atop the song’s disco-guitar-laced hook. “I’m all up on ya,” Snoop hollers at Perry, “cuz you’re representin’ California.”
