Eddy Current Suppression Ring, ‘Rush to Relax’ (Goner)

Recorded in grubby mono, the third album from Australia’s Eddy Current Suppression Ring begins on familiar ground, with frontman Brendan Suppression muttering about anxiety and depression over slashing garage-punk riffs. But on the third track, the six-minute “Tuning Out,” guitarist Eddy Current uncorks a jazzy solo that suggests the quartet has more in mind than raw power. On the charming “Gentleman,” Suppression tenderly woos his heart’s desire, promising, “When it’s cold outside, I’ll lend you my coat,” while “Second Guessing” features trance-inducing electric piano. Not everything works-the title track ends with 18 minutes of ocean noises-but the lads deserve credit for taking risks.
