Jim James, John Legend on New Roots Album
Joanna Newsom also appears on the genre-bending group's June release, How I Got Over.
Philadelphia hip-hop group the Roots are no strangers to genre-bending collaborations — they recently jammed with electro-rockers Hot Chip on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. And with their upcoming June release, the Roots are adding three new artists to their list.
Indie-folk queen Joanna Newsom, My Morning Jacket/Monsters of Folk frontman Jim James, and R&B heartthrob John Legend will make appearances on the new Roots record, How I Got Over, EW confirms.
Roots drummer ?uestlove recently mentioned about the collabo on Twitter: “Yes indeed we are working hard on #HOWIGOTOVER mixing the Joanna Newsom Jawn.” And Thursday, he posted a new video of the pair working on the track. Watch the clip here.
Newsom — harpist, pianist, and singer/songwriter — released her epic three-disc Have One on Me in February.
Jim James, meanwhile, already has a reputation for multi-tasking. The singer/guitarist just kicked off My Morning Jacket’s tour this week, on the heels of his album and tour with indie super group Monsters of Folk. And, he still found time to play a solo Valentine’s Day show in his Kentucky hometown under the moniker Yim Yames.
The Roots debuted the album’s soulful title track on Late Night (where they serve as the in-house band) back in June, but How I Got Over still doesn’t have a release date yet.
