Sacramento, CA’s alt-metal quintet Deftones have just announced details for their sixth record, Diamond Eyes, out May 18, and posted a new 30-second preview of first single “Rocket Skates,” which will be available for full download on February 23 via deftones.com. Hear it below.

In a recent SPIN.com interview, lead singer Chino Moreno said “Rocket Skates” is one of his favorite new tracks. The tune boasts heavy guitar riffs with “beautiful yet violent imagery,” similar to “Knife Party,” a hit from 2000’s White Pony.

Diamond Eyes, produced by Nick Raskulinecz (who has also worked with Foo Fighters and Marilyn Manson), is the first Deftones release since the 2008 car accident that critically injured bassist Chi Cheng, who remains in a Northern California hospital where he is still recovering. In the aftermath of the tragedy, the band scrapped material for their next release, Eros, and started from scratch.

The new record is reminiscent of their old sound, but with a bit of experimentation and abstract lyricism thrown in. “I’ve been wanting to record a fantasy album like White Pony, where the lyrics are less, ‘This is my life and this is what we’re going through,'” Moreno says. “It helps take us away from reality. I don’t like listening to people’s problems — I like music.”

The guys will make a few festival stops this spring, including the Mexico City’s Vive Latino Festival, England’s Download Festival, and Rock on the Range in Columbus, OH. Check out their MySpace page for details.
