Review: John Morales, ‘The M&M Mixes’
Release Date: December 1, 2009
Morales and collaborator Sergio Munzibai mixed hundreds of disco records in the late ’70s and early ’80s, stretching three-minute singles into ten-minute epics with aching breakdowns and percussive free-for-alls. The M&M Mixes surveys Morales’ vocal-infused edits, from the pointillistic funk of Universal Robot Band to the cartoon soul of Bumblebee Unlimited, and adds a disc of unreleased mixes for New York City’s Salsoul label. Rickety drum machines and squelchy keyboards anticipate the nü-disco scene’s cool minimalism, but ultimately these tracks are as showily silky as a Diane Von Furstenberg wrap dress.
