Basement Jaxx, ‘Scars’ (Ultra/XL)

For three studio albums, this London DJ duo asserted their dance-floor eclecticism with a wallop every bit as combustive as it was ornate. While 2006’s Crazy Itch Radio blunted that intensity and immediacy, Scars is a return to form: “Feelings Gone,” a divine disco tearjerker, becomes practically Prince-ly in the hands of soul-pop singer Sam Sparro. The pair’s quixotic arrangements can overshadow their modest songwriting — French blip-hop balladry and other stylistic additions are piled on top of the Jaxx’s house foundation. But that top-heavy wobble still sways a groove like no other.
