Terrific Twitter Trio of the Week

Lots of musicians tweet — but all that Twitters is not gold.

That’s why you’ll want to check out SPIN.com every Friday to see whose tweets we’re reading this week — then update your TweetDeck! (Obligatory Self-Promotion: …while you’re at it, be sure to follow @SPINmagazine!)

This week’s winners:

Who: Weezer’s Rivers Cuomo (@RiversCuomo)

Why You Should Follow: Weezer’s nerdy, bespectacled frontman is a man of mystery on Twitter. Rather than tweet about what he ate for lunch or what he thought of this week’s Mad Men, Cuomo updates his page with stray thoughts (“I need some of that”), overheard conversations (“‘Want some giraffe, Mommy?'”), and clever word play (“Male man,” “Snark at the moon”). While it’s sometimes difficult to make sense of what he’s saying, his tweets are always intriguing — and sometimes wise? (“There would be no rivers without the rain”). As Weezer prepare to release their seventh studio album, Raditude, on Oct. 27, expect Cuomo’s Twitter musings to veer in the direction of promoting, practicing, and performing. Bonus points: he occasionally tweets in Japanese!
Best Tweet of the Week: “I noticed that the new Weezer song is classified as ROCK instead of ALTERNATIVE by Itunes. I wonder what they mean by that.”

Who: M.I.A. (@_M_I_A_)

Why You Should Follow: The colorful, genre-bending singer born Maya Arulpragasam is a new mother and is budy recording an album. But she still makes for a good follow, tweeting about eating crickets with DJ Blaq Starr, wearing clothes that are the “retarded cousin of fashion,” scouting locations for a zombie-themed music video in Sri Lanka, and getting asked by Coca-Cola to be “the face of Coke” (and not being too thrilled about it). Her Twitter page is just as loud and busy as some of her crazy, self-designed outfits — she tweets mostly in caps, with dozens of exclamation points, question marks, and expletives in each post.
Best Tweet of the Week: “CANT BELIEVE THEY REPLACED BEASTIES WITH TENACIOUS D ??????????????????????AND IF I PULL OUT THEY SUE! SO REALLY? TENACIOUS D AFTER ME ?”

Who: Cobra Starship’s Gabe Saporta (@GabrielSaporta)

Why You Should Follow: His Twitter wallpaper alone might be enough of a reason to follow him (it’s a close-up picture of two girls with armfuls of cosmetics applying lip liner as though it were a competitive sport), but it doesn’t stop there. The “Good Girls Go Bad” singer RTs tweets from pop stars like Britney Spears and Demi Lovato, adding his own mocking commentary, posts Twitpics of funny signs and presents from fans, and pokes fun at himself and his bandmates. Whether he’s tweeting about giving Paris Hilton a pearl necklace, watching Gossip Girl, or having his tour bus raided by cops, he always finds a way to get a few laughs out of his followers. Bonus points: if you tweet at him, there’s a good chance he’ll tweet back!
Best Tweet of the Week: “Why am I the only person who thinks watching the playboy channel with the whole band & crew in the front lounge is gay?”
