ApSci, ‘Best Crisis Ever’ (Quannum)

ApSci are poster children for a postmillennial, post-racial fantasy: White rapper-producer Raphael LaMotta is a Bronx-born former punk bassist, while classically trained Filipina singer Dana Diaz-Tutaan hails from Australia. On their third album, the husband-and-wife duo quote from Lil Wayne and Rob Base, merging Ra’s backpacker rhymes and Dana’s soulful new-wave vocals on synth-pop jams like “Under Control” and “Cubic Zirconia.” “Oooh, I’m the shit,” Dana boasts on the electro-bass gem “Easy,” and for most of Best Crisis Ever‘s 40 minutes, you’re inclined to believe her.
