Watch: Frightened Rabbit Unplugged in NYC

Scottish quartet Frightened Rabbit recently finished recording their next album — due in early 2010. (We’re fans of their last one, The Midnight Organ Fight.) And while in the U.S. for some concert dates, frontman Scott Hutchison stopped by SPIN’s NYC office to play an old song, a brand new one, and an excellent cover.

Performing as part of our SPIN Sessions concert series, Hutchison needed only an acoustic guitar to support his wavering tenor, allowing his songs’ hummable melodies to shine through in the stripped-down setting.

His banter was also sharp. Before playing “The Modern Leper,” the buoyant first track off The Midnight Organ Fight, Hutchison challenged the SPIN staff to name another love song about leprosy. We had nothing.

Introducing “Swim Until You Can’t See Land,” a new song, Hutchison waxed lyrical about the fantastic teapots made in Crail, the coastal Scottish village where the tune was written.

But the real highlight came with his cover of Neutral Milk Hotel’s “Song Against Sex,” when Hutchison’s wordless yelps froze everyone watching.See for yourself in the videos below.
