Little Boots, ‘Illuminations’ (Elektra)

What if Caligula sang post-rave dance pop? His horse would be confused, for one. But the idea so charmed Victoria Hesketh, former singer for U.K. electro-punks Dead Disco, that she dubbed her solo outfit after the Roman tyrant. Here, she channels some of his notorious ambition into her first Stateside EP. “Stuck on Repeat” is sweet and featherweight, with a coyly literal melody, and “Love Kills” is a Goldfrapp-worthy rager with an insidious bass line. Pity her finest U.K. single, “Meddle,” didn’t make the cut — but then, her dance-floor reign of terror is only just beginning.
