It’s been nearly a decade since neo-soul icon D’Angelo — whose tumultuous fall from the limelight due to drug and alcohol problems was chronicled by SPIN — released his last new studio album. But in 2009, the man born Michael Eugene Archer will finally return with his long-awaited comeback record.

The album, which the producer/composer/singer is currently finishing up, features collaborations from singer Raphael Saadiq, rap legend Q-Tip, and jazz trumpeter Roy Hargrove. According to D’Angelo’s label, RCA Music Group (J Records), Gnarls Barkley’s Cee-Lo and others are expected to makes cameos on the album as well.

While you await the set’s arrival next year, sate your neo-soul hunger with a recently-released remake of his 1996 song “I Found My Smile Again,” which doubles as the first single off D’Angelo’s forthcoming album.
