Blur Bassist: “Amy Winehouse and Pete Doherty Will Die”
Alex James makes grim predictions about the troubled singers' fate, based on his own history of substance abuse.
Blur bassist and onetime cocaine abuser Alex James has a grim prediction for Amy Winehouse and Babyshambles rocker Pete Doherty: Both will be dead before 2010.
James, who appeared in the BBC America documentary Cocaine Diaries: Alex James in Colombia, and has plenty of firsthand knowledge to draw on, having admitted to spending “a million pounds on champagne and cocaine,” recently voiced his predictions about the cost of hard-partying lifestyles for the two high-profile musicians and fellow Brits. “I’d be surprised if Pete Doherty and Amy Winehouse both live to see the decade out,” he told UK newspaper the Mirror [via Gigwise.com]. “I’ve been in situations where my best friends have been killing themselves (with drugs) and they won’t listen.”
But James wasn’t all doom and gloom when it came to the futures of Winehouse and Doherty — he did offer hope for their recovery. “At least there’s an infrastructure for getting better now,” he said. “If that had existed in Elvis’s day then maybe he’d still be alive.”
