The fact that Satomi Matsuzaki sings in her native Japanese for much of Offend Maggie indicates how, after nine albums of chipper noise rock, this Bay Area quartet operates: They’re just doing what comes naturally (no matter how unnatural it may sound to the average indie rocker). Greg Saunier shatters his itty-bitty drum kit as if doing his daily reps; Matsuzaki chirps about the imagined inner monologues of fauns and basketballs; and the two guitarists lay down leaden boogie riffs against playful vocal-mimicking lines. The inspired moments of sunny pop and weirdo noise seem effortless, but so does all the aimless jamming.
