SPIN.com recently hosted its first-ever Liner Notes event in New York City, a benefit concert for AIDS charity Housing Works and an offshoot of our online Book Club. The idea was to explore the relationship between music and literature, and our two headliners — mutual admirers Tegan Quin of Tegan & Sara and author Augusten Burroughs (Running With Scissors) — were a natural fit: Burroughs asked Tegan to pen a song for the audiobook version of his latest novel, A Wolf at the Table.

At the event, held at the Housing Works Bookstore Café, Tegan and Augusten shared the stage, performed their own works, and chatted candidly about their influences, creative processes, and family backgrounds. Check out the videos below, which include Tegan making a rare appearance without her sister (and performing “His Love,” the song she wrote for Augusten), Augusten reading from his novel, and Colin Francigetto of Circa Survive making his solo debut.
