Jackson Conti, ‘Sujinho’ (Mochilla)

A collaboration between West Coast hip-hop producer Madlib (Otis Jackson Jr.) and percussionist Ivan Conti of the Brazilian band Azymuth, Sujinho revisits the gently insistent rhythms and mouthwatering melodies associated with Brazilian music, chilling everything into one creamy treat. Delicious touches abound — the shimmering xylophone of “Xibaba,” the slinky sax in “Waiting on the Corner” — but the spotlight belongs to Conti, an exceptionally deft drummer who rescues the mildest tracks from blandness and retains a feathery touch even when pounding a hard double-time beat.
