Steel Train

What? Proving that New Jersey has much more to offer than screamo and Springsteen, Steel Train — set to hit Bonnaroo’s stages later this week! — specialize in a particular sound that borrows as much from ’60s-era Bob Dylan as it does from Fall Out Boy. And nowhere is the band’s sound — and live energy — more evident than in the vigorous, colorful music video for “I Feel Weird,” which sees the boys jamming out against a faux sunset backdrop, jangling to the decidedly upbeat, melodic tune as frontman Jack Antonoff sounds off.

Who? Steel Train consists of Jack Antonoff (guitar/vocals/piano), Evan Winiker (bass/backing vocals), Daniel Silbert (guitar/backing vocals), and Jon Shiffman (drums/percussion). Born in 1999 when Antonoff and co-founder (and former member) Scott Irby-Ranniar started busking in the subways of New York City, Steel Train soon dispatched self-recorded demos that made the industry rounds, eventually scoring the band a deal with Drive Thru Records in 2002. The outfit have since released a covers EP and two full-lengths, most recently, 2007’s Trampoline.

Fun Fact: Antonoff previously dated starlet-turned-singer Scarlett Johansson; Several songs on Trampoline directly and indirectly reference her in the lyrics.
