Coldplay Unveil Massive North American Tour

Coldplay

Who? Chart-commanding, piano-driven Brit quartet Coldplay, led by free trade-squawker Chris Martin, and featuring guitarist Jonny Buckland, bassist Guy Berryman, and drummer Will Champion.

What? A massive 29-date North American outing in support of their forthcoming album, the Brian Eno-produced and rather fantastic Spanish-tinged set Viva La Vida (due June 17 via Capitol). Beginning in Philadelphia June 29, just days after their free performance at New York City’s Madison Square Garden June 23, the tour will then hit cities from Kansas City to Boston — with a break in September — before capping in Salt Lake City Nov. 22. For ticketing info, head to coldplay.com.

Should I go? Absolutely. From Coldplay’s 2000 debut Parachutes to their last effort, 2005’s chart-topping X & Y, the outfit fail to disappoint with dazzling, transcendental guitar-meets-keys ballads, and swirling instrumentation over frontman Chris Martin’s pitched, grand diatribes on love and contemporary humanity. For a taste, head to the band’s website to download first single “Violet Hill” free of charge.
