Wondering if the 2004 documentary Dig!‘s harsh depiction of Brian Jonestown mastermind Anton Newcombe might’ve caused Newcombe to reevaluate his loose-cannon shtick? Well, the answer comes right at the top of his long-running psych-rock group’s latest, which opens with a lovely little ditty titled “Bring Me the Head of Paul McCartney on Heather Mills’ Wooden Peg (Dropping Bombs on the White House).” Caked with free-form guitar noise (and nearly 80 minutes long), My Bloody Underground emphasizes the band’s trippy side, often at the expense of Newcombe’s undervalued tunecraft. But mellow it ain’t.
