T.H. White, ‘The Private Spotlight’ (Sky Council)

Amanda Petrusich // January 30, 2008

T.H. White — who writes, plays, and arranges virtually all the tracks here — shows a gift for titillating, slinky melodies (“Private People,” with willowy vocals by Law & Order’s Meghan Wolf, could soundtrack a salacious New York club crawl). But his throbbing electro-pop (think Daft Punk and Junior Boys) is both exhilarating and unpredictable — after featuring two flute solos on his 2004 debut, he hosts the final performance by late Steely Dan flautist Cornelius Bumpus. With such clever, eclectic touches, The Private Spotlight works just as well on a Sunday morning as on a Saturday night.
