Remember ‘Romance’ with the Redwalls

For Redwallsfrontman Logan Baren, the summer still simmers as he wistfully pleadsfor the days with his “darling.” Expounding on love in the hottestseason, “Summer Romance” isn’t quite Danny and Sandy at Rydell High, but the nostalgic number works to the same reminiscent end. Widening afamiliar scope, the begging in the retro-hook (“Please don’t let me saygoodbye.”) recalls the band’s vintage-flavored peers the Strokes, seeing their nimble guitars and raising them some sailing harmonies.

Inthe ’60s-flavored verses Baren sounds like his mind is elsewhere, butas the crescendo builds, pulling him deliberately back to now, hisvoice morphs to a fevered shout: “Time goes on and feelingschange/Infatuation fades away/The ties that bind begin to fray!” Thebursts of denial are all he can do to try to convince himself but hisplaintive tone is revealing — he knows good and well that some thingsend too soon. The Redwalls will release their self-titled full-lengthon Oct. 23 on the Mad Dragon imprint.
