Page France Calls Upon ‘Rabbit’

Baltimore’s Page France is a delightful bunch. As if 2006’s Hello, Dear Wind wasn’t charming enough, the folk-tinged collective does it again with their third outing, the twangy …and the Family Telephone. On “Hat and Rabbit,” a specially recorded live cut captured March 27th at the Crocodile Café in Seattle, lead singer Michael Nau blends all the sweet sounds of the ’60s. With added dashes of Neutral Milk Hotel and Sufjan Stevens, and slight echoes of Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Bad Moon Rising,” Page France will leave you dreaming of those innocent summer days of yesteryear. While the lyrics are a downer at times, (“And I had a new best friend / he went and let me down again”), this upbeat melody is lush in psychedelic sweetness, complete with Neil Young-esque guitar noodling and chanting heard last time by the Beach Boys. …And the Family Telephone is ringing now via Suicide Squeeze.
