Maxïmo Park’s Paul Smith really knows how to use it. In “Girls Who Play Guitars,” the Derby-donning frontman jolts about the Astoria London stage with Mick Jagger-like swagger, doused in flirty high energy that would give Hives fans something to scream about. With jaunty guitar riffs, kitschy synth beats, and Smith’s hyper warbling, the punchy, anthemic “Girls Who Play Guitars,” featured on the English quintet’s second LP, Our Earthly Pleasures, is definitely a song about that one girl with impeccable music taste and the riffs to prove it. But in the end, it’s just a big stripey lie, a mirage, really. Smith concedes this, knowing that she’ll break his heart, but pleads, “I could be who you wanted in the dark.” Our Earthly Pleasures lands stateside today via Warp.
