Chris Walla Releases Solo Tune

An MP3 surfaced this week from Death Cab for Cutie’s guitarist and production prodigy Chris Walla, who’s prepping a full-length album in between stints producing indie rock’s finest. Recorded in 1997 and mixed in 2001, “Dave Narcizo” — named for the Throwing Muses’ drummer in the mid-’90s — may or may not be a track from Walla’s forthcoming solo album, Pitchfork reports. But the uber lo-fi recording, replete with a hop-skip guitar rhythm and overdrive drum pattern, could be a promising omen of Walla’s future release.

The only thing stopping Walla from capping off the album: Everything. As a much-coveted producer, Walla has been pinned down with numerous projects including production duties on the Decemberists’ latest, The Crane Wife and potential production duties on Tegan and Sara’s forthcoming album. As the world patiently awaits Walla’s solo album, tentatively titled It’s Unsustainable, Walla’s Death Cab running mate is growing impatient too. “Gibbard has threatened to ‘hunt me down and stab me’ if I don’t finish,” Walla said told Pitchfork. “So I suppose I don’t really have much choice.”
