New Johnny Cash Video

In the posthumous video for Johnny Cash’s “God’s Gonna Cut You Down,” which just hit airwaves yesterday, close to 40 celebrities pay tribute to the country music icon. Iggy Pop and Chris Martin clap along to Cash’s melancholy, slowly-strummed tune, while Patti Smith, Kris Kristofferson, and Johnny Depp play guitar to it. The clips cuts from statuesque poses by Kanye West, Maroon 5’s Adam Levine, Justin Timberlake, Kate Moss, Sheryl Crow, Bono, Anthony Kiedis, Jay-Z, and Keith Richards, and it also features Chris Rock, Kid Rock, Lisa Marie Presley, and Corinne Bailey Rae as they lip sync Cash’s lines. Other artists, like Terrence Howard, Flea, Q-Tip, Evanescence’s Amy Lee, Tommy Lee, Mick Jones, Travis Barker, Sharon Stone, Brian Wilson, Rick Rubin, and Owen Wilson also make cameos, and people in the online community sound off, debating whether this video does the late crooner justice.

Here’s what the Cash fans are saying:

“I must stand back in awe at the sheer genius of this video. I had high hopes, but this knocked them out of the water. This is a great tribute to possibly the greatest recording artist of all time.” — Nick Nitro {FTA}, myspace.com

“Jesus, Justin Timberlake in a Cash video? That’s tragic 🙁 Pissants like him are not fit to sniff the steam of the great Johhny Cash’s piss.” — ravenblaze10, youtube.com

“For a tribute video, that was shit. It was all countless famous faces and yeah some lipped a few words here and there. I haven’t been so disappointed in my life [and] I see it as a great Cash song with people getting fucking glamour shots — although I’m sure they were all deeply effected by him. I think this video was a waste of money.” — your microwave totaly wants me, myspace.com

“I really must say that that has GOT to be one of the most absolutely BEAUTIFUL music videos that I have ever seen in my life, to go along with a truly breathtaking song…it is really a testament to itself!!! It is truly amazing to see so many people, from such different walks of life, show their respect to one man, who has brought together so many people, and Johnny DEPP, in particular, is truly my personal Hollywood HERO…Thank you to Mr. Cash and all of those who put so much of themselves in to this project, a TIMELESS piece of art!!! — Lost_X_Horizons, myspace.com
