Mute Math Try Improv Percussion, Rock Out with Keytar Out

The Whigs had a triumphant homecoming last night during the Mute Math-headlined show at Athens, GA legendary 40 Watt Club. Jackson, Mississippi’s Jonezetta opened the show, playing songs from their recent release, Popularity, showing a hard and edgy side to new-wave’s revival. Athens’ resident mop-tops the Whigs reclaimed their home stage with a renewed energy and precision. As they played both unreleased tunes and tracks from their debut, Give ‘Em All A Big Fat Lip, an energetic circle of super-fans bounced in the center of the crowd, led by 24-year-old Athens native Adam Waters, who credits the band with helping him score. “I always hook up after a Whigs show,” he confided to SPIN.com. New Orleans natives Mute Math left the Athens audience in shock with their energetic, ambient pop-rock. With mouths ajar and asses shaking, the crowd devoured stunning renditions of songs from their self-titled debut. Using the surface of every present instrument onstage for percussion, the quartet even made the keytar look cool. STORY BY SAMANTHA PROMISLOFF. PHOTOS BY COLIN SMITH
