The Summer Obsession

Who? Jacksonville, FL-based emo-pop quartet the Summer Obsession — Lucien Walker (vocals/piano), Fin Leavell (vocals/guitar), Christ Miller (bass), and ex-Good Charlotte drummer Chris Wilson — earned quite the following on 2004’s Vans Warped Tour, prompting the band to hightail it to L.A. to land a label deal. The move proved to be a good one, as Virgin Records scooped them up and MySpace’s Tom Anderson included one of their songs on his site’s compilation album.

What’s the Deal? The quartet really do sound obsessed with the sunny season on their full-length debut, This Is Where You Belong, which teems with upbeat tempos, poppy keys, rolling rhythms, and anthemic guitar. Listening to the band’s lyrics, though, it seems the group are more interested in escaping than they are in summer: One track’s titled “Never Coming Back” and “Do You Remember?” is hardly a P.S.A. with lines like, “Baby it’s cool / You suck at school anyway / So pack it up, let’s run away.”

Fun Fact: After a successful trek across the country on Warped Tour, the Summer Obsession played a few gigs at the next logical venue: the Playboy Mansion. JULIA SIMON
