Giant Drag, “God Only Knows”
Since so little new tuneage emerges between Thanksgiving and Christmas, random covers always find a way to amuse me. Thanks to Melody Nelson (via Gorilla vs. Bear), I have this cutesy Beach Boys retread by Giant Drag to cuddle with on a cold winter’s night.

Bloc Party, “2 More Years (MSTRKRFT Remix)”
While major labels strike deals signed in blood with Microsoft and Viacom, other labels are trying out a novel idea: giving stuff away for free. On their new blog, Up Your Jaxxy, Vice plans to offer some stellar freebies, and they’ve gotten off to a splendid start with this throbbing remix of Bloc Party’s latest. It’s a skippy dance track in the vein of “Helicopters,” but there’s an appealingly demure fragility to Kele’s vocals that substantially ups the emotional ante. And the remix made me dance like a 120-pound boy in a sleeveless t-shirt.

The Sopranos Countdown
Not all of us are early adopters. Or, premium cable subscribers. When The Sopranos started to become water-cooler fodder a few years back, I wasn’t in the income bracket where HBO was standard fare. So now that Season Six is arriving in 2006, HBO is putting an entire season’s worth of episodes each month into its On Demand channel, allowing fools like me to see how it all began.

Voxtrot, “The Start of Something”
Not going to pontificate; I wrote this band’s Band of the Day feature. But give this one a listen and shimmy yourself silly.
