Hasidic Reggae Progenitor Begets Debut Album

Lo! From on high, the world’s first Hasidic toaster, Matisyahu, is readying his first studio album, Youth, for a January 31 release. According to Billboard.com, the Jamaica-loving Jew’s live album, Live at Stubbs, has sold 87,000 copies and reached No. 2 on the Billboard’s reggae charts. Matisyahu just announced a Hanukkah (or Chanukah, or Hanukah) tour that kicks off December 24 in Philadelphia. He might be playing Christmas Eve, but the Hasidic dancehall master doesn’t work on the Sabbath. Mati also contributes to P.O.D.’s next album, Testify, also due out in early 2006. He performs tonight in Englewood, Colorado and will support O.A.R. at a Madison Square Garden show on January 14.
