Bono, Geldof Pleased with G8 Results

Bob Geldof, the driving force behind the recent Live 8 concerts, and consummate rock diplomat Bono were both optimistic about the 50 billion dollar increase in African aid granted by last week’s G8 summit. According to the Associated Press, Geldof declared the G8 decision “A qualified success,” and said that “a great justice” had been done for the people of Africa. Bono got poetic about the decision: “It’s not the end; it’s the beginning of the end. A mountain has been climbed here only to reveal higher peaks behind it.” Not everyone was as enthusiastic as the U2 frontman about the G8 decision. As reported by the BBC, Kumi Naidoo, chair of the Global Call to Action against Poverty said, “The people have roared but the G8 has whispered.” Millions of people viewed the Live 8 performances, which took place in several major cities including Philadelphia, London, Paris, Berlin, Rome, and Toronto, and encouraged awareness of African poverty.
